Ford’s market share in Europe is under pressure from competitors who are offering big incentives on new cars and trucks. "I’ve never seen discounts like this," said Ingvar Sviggum, Ford of Europe’s vice president of sales and marketing. Sviggum said manufacturers are boosting incentives to spur sales as federal scrappage programs end in Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom. European scrappage programs are similar to last summer’s cash-for-clunkers program in the U.S. "We’ve seen some of the big competitors putting up to 40% discounts on some fleet deals," Sviggum said. Sales of Ford’s new cars and trucks in 19 European countries increased 1.8%, or by 1,600 vehicles, in February but total industry sales rose 2.9% from a year earlier. Ford’s market share declined 0.1% in February to 8.4%. A 25.6% sales increase of its Ka and a 13% gain for its Fiesta helped Ford hold onto market share in February. Sviggum said Ford won’t pursue market share at the expense of lower profits. Meanwhile, the Russian government hopes its cash-for-clunkers program will result in 200,000 new car sales this year. The program provides a discount of 50,000 rubles, or $1,700, on a new car for the trade-in of a vehicle that is 10 years old or older. Sales of new and used cars and trucks declined by about 50% in Russia last year. "For a Russian consumer, $1,700 is a lot of money," Sviggum said. "So it should work."

As Roles Of Women Change, Ford Recognizes Their Societal Status – And Their Unique Purchasing Punch WEBWIRE Tuesday, March 16, 2010 * Women’s History Month in March brings to light the changing role of women in society, and how that shifting position affects their purchasing power * Statistics show that women are directly responsible for 45 to 50 percent of all new vehicles purchased in the U.S., and they have a direct influence on up to 80 percent of vehicles they don’t purchase themselves * Oftentimes, men and women are looking for the same features in vehicles but use different language to describe the attributes important to them DEARBORN, Mich.
– The old-time Ford advertisements from the turn of the 20th century tell a quaint story: They show the woman of that time as a fragile creature, somewhat prone to panic, in need of a simplistic automobile that even she can operate.

Times have most definitely changed. Ford vehicles are still durable and easy to handle, but the women behind the wheel bear little resemblance to the hothouse flower of yesteryear. She’s strong, self-assured, and very capable of taking care of herself. As the National Women’s History Project sponsors its 30th Women’s History Month in March, Ford Motor Company is more aware than ever of the changing role that women hold in today’s society. “Women pack a powerful purchasing punch,” said Christine Stasiw Lazarchuk, director of global marketing research for Ford. “And that’s grabbed the attention of all automakers searching for new business in an era of tight competition. Companies that fail to realize that will be left behind, especially now, when the margin between success and failure is narrow, and we’re fighting for every advantage and sale.” Statistics prove out her point.
“Women are directly responsible for 45 to 50 percent of all new vehicles purchased in the U.S, and they have a direct influence of up to 80 percent of vehicles they don’t purchase themselves,” Stasiw Lazarchuk said.

“And 65 percent take their own vehicles to the dealership or shop for repair. Women account for a whopping $85 billion in automotive and related businesses.” Those numbers, from 2007, are only expected to grow stronger. * Women leading the way But it’s not only the U.S. that is seeing women’s roles shift. “The whole world is changing, and it’s changing fast,” said Sheryl Connelly, Ford’s global trend manager. “Women are at the forefront of change that’s contributing significantly to an increase in their progress and power.” Connelly sees five major global factors driving that change: * Improved education: Although gender disparities persist in some countries, the gender gap in education continues to narrow, allowing women to find their way into the work force.
In the U.S., the number of women earning Ph.D.s is rising at a rate of 63 percent a year. * Career opportunities: With more education, women are finding their way into the work force, earning their own money. In China, for instance, 44 percent of government jobs are held by women. * Financial independence: Increased earning power is leading to financial independence for more women. Working women in relationships often out-earn their partners – by 25 percent in the U.S., 30 percent in Great Britain. * Delayed marriage and parenthood: More and more women are choosing to delay marriage to pursue education, career and personal development, with many choosing to have fewer children later in life. In Bangladesh, for instance, marriage is delayed due to incentives for girls to attend primary and secondary school, and in Brazil, the declining fertility rate has been attributed to women modeling their lives on the small, happy families they see on television.

* Media: The spread of information in the media, particularly the Internet, has empowered women. About half of women worldwide own and use personal computers. Changing roles as consumers As the world changes, women obviously change with it, Connelly notes. When the economy began to crumble, many women took a lead role in keeping the home front together – either going back to work or taking over the belt-tightening of the budget. “Gender roles have blurred,” Connelly said. “You no longer have the women always staying at home and the man of the house always the breadwinner. You don’t have those definitive roles anymore.” That could make things difficult for Ford’s marketing team, charged with reaching target demographics that include, of course, the specific needs and wants of women.
Unless you remember a few things, said Chantel Lenard, group marketing manager for global and midsize cars. “Ford doesn’t design cars for the sexes,” she said. “We don’t design ‘male’ cars and ‘female’ cars. We design well-made, well-designed cars with features that appeal to both men and women.” Ford researchers queried women with 2008 vehicles and found that these are the highest-ranked features they don’t have on their vehicles, but they’d like to: * Run-flat tires (57 percent) * Rain-sensing wipers (44 percent) * Auto park assist (32 percent) * Tire pressure monitoring system (18 percent).

Notice on the list, said Lenard, that these are features women like, but men wouldn’t object to. In fact, she said, oftentimes, men and women want the same things. They just use different language. “We hear the same thing over and over again – both men and women want reliability, fuel economy, driving dynamics and safety. But the way that they express that is completely different,” Lenard said. “For instance, a woman might say, ‘I don’t want to break down somewhere and be stranded,’ and a man might say, ‘I don’t want to have to spend time getting my car fixed.’” The differences continue, she notes.
“Men and women both appreciate horsepower and responsive handling, but the woman may say it’s because they can help her get out of a dangerous situation quickly and easily, and the man might appreciate it because of the way the car can handle the corners.

It’s just a different way of looking at the same situation. They both want the same features on the vehicle. They express it differently.” That said, Lenard does believe there are some differences in the sexes. Females tend to notice details like warmer interior colors or hand-stitching. And they’re willing to pay for little extras that they feel are worth it, like heated steering wheels or specialized interior packages. A growing influence Women’s roles in society will continue to shift and change, said Connelly; that much is obvious. And as Ford grows as a company, it, too, will continue to monitor how this important demographic views not only vehicles, but the world in general. “There is great growth potential for companies that understand what women want,” she said. “Every day, the world is changing and women play a key role in the shifts that are occurring. At Ford, we know that women represent a huge market opportunity, and we work to design, develop and market our products and services in a way that captures the attention of this incredibly influential buying group.” # # # About Ford Motor Company Ford Motor Company, a global automotive industry leader based in Dearborn, Mich., manufactures or distributes automobiles across six continents.
With about 198,000 employees and about 90 plants worldwide, the company’s automotive brands include Ford, Lincoln, Mercury and Volvo.

Bishop Ford outplayed St. Michael Academy for two and a half quarters. The Falcons led by 12 just about midway through the third quarter. They had an answer for most of the Eagles’ runs. But when all was said and done, after a knock-down, drag-out war of a girls basketball game, St. Mike’s was the winner, 60-53, in the CHSAA Class AA semifinals Saturday, March 13, at Christ the King HS in Queens. “When you play a team like that, you gotta play every possession,” Ford coach Mike Toro said. “We took a couple plays off and you can’t do that.” With Ford up, 34-24, and 4:57 to go in the third quarter, St. Mike’s (19-5) went to its trademark amoeba zone and it helped spur a 10-0 run that tied the score up. From there, things went back and forth, but the Eagles used their size advantage to perfection and Jennifer O’Neill took over for stretches. “The kid is a McDonald’s All-American,” Toro said. “In my opinion, she’s the best guard in New York City. That’s what All-Americans do.” O’Neill had 21 of her 25 points in the second half. Tiffany Jones and Bra’Shey Ali got crucial putbacks. It didn’t help when Falcons star Shayra Brown was dumped on her head fighting for a rebound with Jones late in the fourth. The last quarter and a half just eluded Ford (21-6). “You could say it hurt us,” Toro said of Brown’s spill. … “The kid fought hard. You gotta love the kid. In the future, it’s going to be scary to see what kind of basketball player she’s gonna be.” For Brown, her next game will be at Boston College. For Diani Mason, who had a team-high 23 points, she’ll be back wearing Falcons red next fall. She arguably played her finest high-school game Saturday, knocking down 3-pointers, pulling up for jumpers and muscling in tough layups. “It’s her team next year,” Toro said. This season, which Toro, the first-year coach, called “the warning year,” Bishop Ford wasn’t supposed to get this far. The Falcons weren’t supposed to hand Christ the King just its second league loss in 10 years. They weren’t supposed to beat St. Mike’s in a non-league game back in December. This group matured and jelled quicker than most thought. ADVERTISEMENT “I’m proud of how far we’ve gotten,” said Brown, who never envisioned such success as a freshman. “It’s one year at a time.” Toro didn’t want to think much about 2010-11 after the game, though. He was too preoccupied with the thought that Ford had St. Mike’s on the ropes again, but let the Eagles get off and win the game. But then, all of a sudden, you could see a glimmer in his eye. Next year is coming quicker than he thought. “The future is definitely bright,” said Toro, whose JV team won the city title. “You gotta look at us as a team to watch. Not to be cocky or anything, but I think next year we’re going to go all the way upstate.”

The Wonderstruck Studios animation facility project will occupy office space at Ford Field and open by June 1, its backer told Crain s this afternoon. However, the Detroit Lions, who handled leasing for the office space attached to the stadium, said no lease has been signed. The studio is leasing 7,500 feet of production office space at the venue, said Michelle Richards in a call from Los Angeles, along with a 14,000-square-foot sound stage that was already at the stadium.
The next phase will be construction of 100,000 square feet of production space, she said. Detroit-based Hamilton Anderson Associates has been hired to develop a master plan for the build out, Richards said in a statement about the project issued this afternoon. She also said Wayne County and the city of Detroit have been helping with the Ford Field negotiations since July. Messages were left for Turkia Mullin, assistant Wayne County executive and chief development officer, and Stephanie Baron, press secretary for Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano. Bill Keenist, the Detroit Lions senior vice president of communications and marketing, said there is no signed lease and the team would have no other comment. The business staff at Ford Field deferred comment to Keenist, who works out of the team s Allen Park training facility. The team subleases Ford Field from Wayne County. The stadium, which includes commercial office rental space that used to be part of the old Hudson s warehouse, is owned by the Detroit-Wayne County Stadium Authority. The facility will be aimed at those who need to use green screen, motion capture, camera tracking and real-time virtual studio capabilities that use a digital pipeline. Two companies have been hired to work on the Wonderstruck project, according to its news release: Los Angeles-based The Third Floor Inc. , which does pre-visualization work and has worked on Avatar and Alice In Wonderland, and Seven Group, a Canadian company that works with information technology projects and whose clients include Ubisoft, Disney, Electronic Arts and Technicolor.

Richards, a veteran television and video game producer, announced in February 2009 that she planned to buy the vacant former MGM Grand casino site for her $86 million Wonderstruck project that would directly employ 413 people.
That deal fell through in August after negotiations broke down. Richards subsequently revised the direct employment number to about 60. The original project was green-lighted in February 2009 by the Michigan Economic Development Corp. for a state tax credit valued at $16.9 million over 12 years to convince Richards to expand in Michigan over competing sites in India, China and Korea. In addition, Infrastructure Development Film and Digital Media incentives totaling $11.7 million were approved for the project. The city of Detroit said it would provide abatements, as well. It s unclear if the new project will still qualify for those tax breaks, or if a new application will be filed. Richards plan was an animation, video game and film facility modeled on the $105 million Los Angeles Center Studios, a 1999 project by L.A.-based real estate developers SHM Partners that turned a 20-acre vacant Unocal headquarters campus into a 450,000-square-foot modern studio.

SHM has been Richards partner in the Detroit project. //comments gSiteLife.Comments("ExternalResource", "100319882", 20, "TimeStampDescending"); //updateArticleAction new NYX.ieSafeExecution(doUpdateArticle).execute("100319882",globalSiteUrl + "/article/201003161433/FREE/100319882","Wonderstruck Studios coming to Ford Field");

March 8, 2010, 6:27 am Updated: 3:37 pm –> Ford Adds Security and Other Features to Sync By RIVA RICHMOND The Internet is coming to cars – and so are security systems to keep viruses and hackers out.
Ford Motor plans to announce Monday a set of data-security technologies for Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles that have Sync a system that lets car owners connect digital media players and Bluetooth-enabled mobile phones to their vehicle’s entertainment system and operate them with voice commands or controls in the steering wheel.

Sync, which Ford developed with Microsoft and first released in 2008 models, also provides driving directions, traffic information and weather, sports and other news. Sync is available in most midrange models as a $395 option and comes standard in more expensive ones. Car owners must activate Sync, but about 70 percent do so, Ford says. In 2011, Sync will also allow Wi-Fi Internet access and Web surfing when the vehicle is in park. And this development will open the door to new electronic security issues. Malefactors could look for ways to access a car’s computer systems via the Internet, much as they do today with PCs. With that in mind, Ford is introducing new security features to ensure that no harm can come to the vital systems used in the operation of the vehicle or to the valuable personal data brought into cars via mobile devices.
Ford has not yet seen any malicious virus attacks or hacks of vehicle computer systems, says Jim Buczkowski, director of global electrical and electronics systems engineering. But he said preparing for that possibility now that the car and consumer-electronics world are colliding is “just prudent.” Customers are likely to get “all the good things as well as the bad things” that come with Internet connectivity, he says.

“It’s important that we take those lessons learned from the Internet and bring them to the car.” To start, Ford has added a hardware firewall that regulates what information may pass between the entertainment system and the vehicle’s computer.
The two computers must exchange information about things like GPS location, temperature and speed. But the firewall bars connections by any external parties looking for direct access to the vehicle s computer. Moreover, the entertainment computer does not allow the download or execution of any applications, which could include malicious software. While users will be able to get upgrades of the Sync system, those won’t come via the Internet connection. Rather, customers must download Ford’s updates on their computers, put them on a USB thumb drive and plug that device into the car’s USB port. The computer won’t accept any new software that isn’t from Ford. (Any changes to the vehicle computer must be made at a dealer.) Ford is also adding tools that protect personal information, such as contact lists and address books provided to the car by mobile phones and music libraries provided by digital-music players.

And it’s introducing a “valet mode” feature that lets drivers add a four-digit PIN to protect programmed home addresses stored in their navigation systems from prying eyes. Finally, Ford is unveiling several new locking features to deter would-be car thieves, including an “engine immobilizer” that prevents hot-wiring and a code system for entry without a key.
