Young, Bell, Jones Earn Built Ford Tough Awards

Alba-Golden’s Ryan Young, Canton’s Casey Bell and Mineola’s Cory Jones have been named Built Ford Tough/Dallas Cowboys Texas High School Players of the Week. During the final week of the regular season Bell, a quarterback, led 70-plus yard drives at the end of each half in a 30-28 victory against Bullard. The first led to a field goal, and the second produced a 21-yard touchdown pass with four second left in the fourth quarter that clinched a playoff berth.

Bell finished the night 26-of-31 for 304 yards and the TD, plus rushed for 109 yards and three TDs. On the season, Bell has completed 192 of 307 passes for 2,487 yards and 18 TDs. He has rushed 172 times for 841 yards and 12 TDs. “He’s a great leader,” said Canton head coach Lance Angel. “That’s why his teammates elected him captain. And he thrives in the two-minute drill. The kids believe in him.

With the clock ticking down on our season, they never doubted that we’d score.” Meanwhile Young, a running back, rushed for 367 yards and five touchdowns on 18 carries in Alba-Golden’s 67-28 season-ending win against Hawkins. He scored on runs of 28, 58, 42, 75 and 11 yards. In limited action on defense, he made eight tackles. “He’s a wonderful young man,” said Alba-Golden head coach Paul Frye. “He’s not particularly vocal. He simply leads by example.

He gives that proverbial one-hundred ten percent every day. It’s great to have him as part of our program.” On Thursday, Jones received his award during the pep rally in Mineola. Jones was the Class 3A Player of the Week for Week Nine. Jones has helped the Yellowjackets to their first winning season in almost two decades. The 5-9, 165-pound Jones rushed 34 times for 292 yards and four touchdowns in Mineola’s 43-36 win over White Oak.
